Discriminatory U.S. Policies Hit Global Academic Exchange

Source: Science and Technology Daily | 2026-04-23 11:05:18 | Author: Hu Dingkun & Gong Qian

Recently, around 20 Chinese scholars who traveled to the U.S. with valid visas to attend an academic conference were subjected to unreasonable interrogation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and denied entry.

In recent years, discriminatory law enforcement practices by U.S. immigration authorities — such as unwarranted interrogation and even detention of international scholars — have become increasingly common.

The U.S. is one of the most important host countries for international academic conferences.

Its discriminatory immigration law enforcement has sparked widespread concern in academic circles, severely discouraging international scholars from attending conferences in the U.S.

Scholars and academic organizations from countries have publicly boycotted academic conferences held in the U.S.

Skift Meetings, a leading media outlet covering the meetings and events industry, reported that "the U.S. is losing ground as a host for academic exchange."
