Research Cooperation Threatens National Security?

Source: Science and Technology Daily | 2026-08-26 16:23:14 | Author: TANG Zhexiao

The U.S. Department of Defense has ordered 30 domestic universities to immediately review their collaborations with foreign entities of concern. The reviews address partnerships with entities identifiedunder DoD's Section 1286 List.

Scientific research cooperation between American universities and Chinese institutions stands as a primary target of this crackdown. Among the 130 foreign entities on the 1286 List, 88 are Chinese universities and research institutions.

By framing research partnerships with China-related entities as a national security threat, the U.S. side is severely overstretching the concept of national security and politicizing normal scientific research collaborations.

The blanket restrictions on scientific cooperation with Chinese entities have far exceeded the boundaries of national security.

Curbing Sino-U.S. scientific cooperation will block U.S. sci-tech development, and even accelerate the decline of its technological lead.
