DJI Drone Sets Peak Research Record

On July 9, Chinese drone maker DJI unveiled the DJI EV50, a new vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) cargo drone that combines the advantages of multirotor and fixed-wing aircraft. Earlier this year, the drone joined a Chinese scientific expedition to the northern slope of Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest peak, and reached a stable altitude of 8,861 meters carrying a payload.

Flying at 8,861 meters presents what engineers call the "impossible triangle" for drones: extremely low air pressure, freezing temperatures, and severe turbulence.

According to Zhou Yanxi, product manager for DJI cargo drones, the EV50 has a hybrid-wing configuration featuring eight VTOL rotor assemblies and three propulsion motors, capable of generating up to 27 horsepower. It is also the first in its class to employ inrunner motors, complemented by a high-density cooling system and optimized air-intake openings to maintain performance in the thin air found in extreme altitudes.

The drone's ability to fly over Qomolangma also relied on numerous engineering refinements.

"We routed the power cables inside the leading edge of the wing and used natural airflow entering through the wing-root air inlet to cool the D-shaped wing compartment," Zhou said. "This effectively turned the wing itself into a natural air-cooling duct."

The skies above the Qomolangma are notorious for rapidly shifting winds. A sudden wind shear can cause dramatic fluctuations in relative airspeed, increasing the risk of aerodynamic stall.

"The flight control system continuously monitors airspeed," Zhou said. "If it detects a sudden drop, it automatically increases thrust output within milliseconds to compensate for the effects of wind shear."

To withstand the extreme cold, the EV50 is equipped with a self-heating battery system to ensure stable power output. Its heated pitot tube prevents icing that could obstruct airspeed measurements, enabling the aircraft to maintain accurate and reliable speed sensing even in snow and freezing conditions.

Redundancy in design is equally critical. The drone is equipped with four sets each of elevators, ailerons, and batteries to ensure flight safety, with an entire-aircraft parachute system for protection in emergencies.

The EV50 is designed for cross-regional aerial transport on the scale of 100 kilometers. "A hundred-kilometer-class drone serves as a complement to existing logistics networks," said Jin Hao, global sales director of DJI's delivery division. In villages halfway up mountains or in remote towns, traditional trucks incur high costs and pose significant risks—drones can fill that gap and enable point-to-point direct delivery.
