Banning New Chinese-made Optical Transceivers Is a Blunder
The U.S. media recently reported that the Federal Communications Commission is drafting a ban on imports of new Chinese optical transceivers.
This move will prove a blunder. Research shows that U.S. firms simply cannot replace the volume of Chinese-made optical transceivers within 12 to 24 months.
A blanket ban on China's new optical transceivers will create a significant near-term operational bottleneck for U.S. data center operators. This includes Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Google.
As Jukan, an analyst at U.S. semiconductor investment research firm Citrini Research, put it bluntly: "The US restriction on imports of Chinese optical transceivers is nothing short of self-inflicted damage. US data centers will literally grind to a halt."
Blocking imports of China's new optical modules will only add unnecessary headwinds and costs to the development of America's AI technology and industrial ecosystem.
